The Mid-Winter Funk: It’s Real & How To Get Out Of It

For the past couple of weeks, several of my friends, family members, and clients have told me that they’re in somewhat of a “winter funk”. Some more than others, but, regardless, many people that I care about are feeling a little “off” right now.

Some people are experiencing anxiety and a little bit of depression whereas others are experiencing spacey minds with racing thoughts. I know other people are feeling chilled all of the time while others are experiencing issues with their digestion (hello, constipation!)

I know this all too well. Every winter, up until this year, I would experience noticeable anxiety and a shift in my mindset. I went from the positive vibrant girl I was all summer to an anxious girl with a racing mind once winter hit. This year, I was able to steer clear from the anxiety I usually have to deal with year after year, but I was in a bit of a funk this January. I was gone from home for the entire month, travelling to my hometown, to Calgary, and then back again and it goes without saying that for the entire month of January I had no consistent schedule whatsoever, even my sleep schedule was off. Some nights were late (like, 5:00 AM late!) and others were early and with all of the inconsistency and lack of schedule, I was left feeling very out of balance, which isn’t surprising.

According to Ayurveda, in the winter we can become out of balance for several reasons, one of them being not abiding to a consistent schedule or routine. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for being spontaneous and I think it is healthy to not be obsessive about having a consistent schedule, but in the winter months we can really benefit from sticking to a routine and doing things at the same time on a daily basis, like going to bed, which I did not all of January.

Come February, though, I was able to get back into my usual routine. I started to go to bed at approximately the same time every night, I started waking up at approximately the same time every morning, and I began doing a morning ritual every single morning. By doing this, I was able to get out of my winter funk and feel in balance again!

This winter funk thing is real! There is nothing wrong with you, rather you’re just out of balance right now if you’ve been feeling a little bit off this winter.
