Freedom Friday Interview: Robyn Baldwin

Welcome to the very first Freedom Friday Interview of many! For more about my Freedom Friday Interview series, please read this post

Basically, I wanted to start a series on all about freedom because my mission in life is to help everyone welcome more freedom into their life. For too many years, I felt shackled to an eating disorder or disordered eating and missed out on a lot of special moments in my life. As an ED survivor, I feel as though it is my purpose on this earth to help others so they do not have to suffer like I did.

This Freedom Friday Interview series isn’t about eating disorders, though. As you’ll see with each interview, there are many ways to feel as though you’re restricted or confined by some sort of walls that have been built throughout your life. You’ll also read with each interview that there are different ways (countless ways, actually) to embrace freedom.

Please enjoy our first Freedom Friday Interview! I’m welcoming my good friend, Robyn Baldwin, onto the blog today to share her story of love, heartache, and freedom. Welcome, Robyn!

1. I am so happy to have you on as a Freedom Friday guest! Give us a little background about yourself before we dive into the juiciness of freedom and how it applies to you and your life!

I call myself an Alpha Female and a Work / Life Harmony Strategist. I’ve evolved the definition of an Alpha Female into someone who is a powerful and assertive woman. Her confidence is due to being an intelligent and intellectual problem-solver. Being an Alpha Female is a State of Mind based on choosing ambition and being proud of it. She strives for a happy and healthy work/life harmony. Type A Alpha Females often come across as strong willed and selfish. When we stay true to our authentic selves and stay true to our mission we shine. She puts the needs of herself first without sacrificing her principles or dignity. She fills up her cup or gas tank first so that she has enough energy for her friends, family, and coworkers. A true Alpha Female strives for synergy with the world around her. She wants a perfect work/life balance but knows that it requires being true to your priorities and what makes you happy. She is never complacent about striving for better and nurtures relationships with the people in her life.

I work full time in the corporate world as a Marketing Manger. I’m also a fitness & lifestyle blogger over at and have my own podcast, The Alpha Female Podcast. In my 20s I was a CFL cheerleader, a fitness competitor and I became a published fitness model. I freelance write on the side. I am going to be a future best selling author in August when my book Love Lost, Life Found comes out. I also spend time doing brand ambassador work for companies I love. I’m an obstacle course racer, road & trail runner, weight lifter, former spin teacher and yogi. I also call myself an MS Warrior after being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in December of 2014.

2. What does “freedom” mean to you?

Freedom to me means happiness. It means having the free will to choose our lives but seeking guidance from our higher power. I call mine God. Freedom means I can stumble through life and lose my way and then receive guidance at just the right time or in “HIS” time that puts me on the path I’m meant to live. It also means living authentically in what feels good to me, far from thinking of others judgments of me.

3. Share about the time in your life when you lacked freedom. What was your struggle?

I lacked freedom when I thought I was stuck in a relationship with a man that I thought I was supposed to marry. For four years I was in a very toxic relationship that ended with us calling off the wedding in 2012. The relationship was wrought with us battling his mental illness and alcoholism and finally hitting a rock bottom moment when I realized I was not responsible for his happiness.

4. What was your turning point? When did you realize that you needed to embrace freedom?

A years of caring for this individual where I ended up giving up things in my life I enjoyed in the hopes that I would make him happy we hit rock bottom one night. We had called off our wedding one month before the date but were still living together. Throughout that month he had come home drunk every single night. That night he came home drunk yet again, looked at me and said “You disgust me.” I knew in that moment that it wasn’t about me and that he wasn’t ok and I couldn’t spend another minute inside that relationship.

5. How do you allow freedom into your life on a daily basis?

Today I allow freedom in my life by pursuing my multi-passions whether it be writing, blogging, training for obstacle course races, taking a yoga class, going for a run with Havoc (my boyfriend’s Husky German Sheppard), going camping with my boyfriend, recording podcasts, writing my book Love Lost, Life Found, building diverse income streams in my personal brand business and just being my authentic Alpha Female self in basically all areas of my life.

6. I believe our journey towards freedom never truly ends, it just continues to progress to more and more freedom. How have you challenged yourself recently to embrace more freedom into your life?

I create bucket lists. They were started because I had stopped living my life for four years while I was in this toxic relationship. It started simply with a summer bucket list so I could make the most of my first summer being single in 5 years. When winter came I made a winter bucket list to ensure I was making the most of sometimes what’s known as a harsh Canadian winter. From there it became a list of things I want to try in my life or things that I adored in my childhood. Now it’s also adding things that push me out of my comfort zone like sky diving and bungee jumping which I did in the summer of 2015.

7. What is one golden nugget of wisdom you can provide to those who are currently struggling with embracing freedom today?

You’ll find your freedom one day and at that point in time you’ll just know. You’ll also always keep discovering what freedom means to you and it will feel oh so good in your gut that you’ll just be in awe of your life as it keeps unraveling into awesomeness.

8. And before we say good bye, how can we stay connect with you over social media?
