How I Found My Parasite: The Importance of Functional Lab Tests

Last week, I shared what I’ve been struggling with health wise for the past 10 months. After months of digging and doing various tests, I finally found a parasite. If you’d like to read more about the journey I’ve been on for the past 10 months, read this post.

Today, I want to share with you exactly how I found my parasite and the importance of functional diagnostic lab tests.

How I Found My Parasite

After not feeling well for a few months, I had blood work done by my medical doctor. The results showed that I had low white blood cell count and elevated liver enzymes. These two markers told me that my body was fighting something (and that I wasn’t going crazy). As I said in my last post, my medical doctor didn’t seem interested in digging with me. I wanted to know what my body was trying to fight, but she didn’t seem interested in digging with me for the root cause.

This is when I took matters into my own hands. Luckily, I was in the midst of Level One of Restorative Wellness Solutions, learning how to run and interpret an adrenal hormone panel, GI stool analysis panel, and food sensitivity panel (MRT). So, I treated myself as if I were my own client – I ran all three labs on myself (adrenal hormone, GI, and food sensitivity) to see if I could finally get to the root of my health issues.

As always, the tests came back with an abundance of information, however, not exactly what I was looking for…

I was experiencing extreme fatigue, to the point that I thought I had stage 3 adrenal fatigue (low cortisol levels). However, my adrenal panel came back and presented a total cortisol value within the optimal range. My results, although not perfect, did not explain why I felt so extremely exhausted constantly throughout the day. However, what they did show was that my cortisol was slightly elevated at night. Elevated cortisol at night can mean either or all of the following: HPA axis dysregulation, a compromised/over active immune system, and or blood sugar imbalance.

With this information, I first looked at my diet and made a few small changes to address any possible blood sugar imbalances. It was quite apparent that my blood sugar levels could very likely be on a rollercoaster. So, to address this, I decreased the amount of carbohydrates I was eating slightly and increased the amount of fat I was eating by a lot. After making this change, my energy has improved tremendously, however, I was still getting sick. I developed 3 different infections in the month of June! I knew my immune system was being compromised by something, so I continued to dig.

The first GI stool analysis that I completed revealed to me that I had to work on increasing my stomach acid, gallbladder function, and gut flora. I didn’t have any bacterial or fungal overgrowth and I also tested negative for a parasite.

With this functional information, I began to supplement with the high quality supplements I was learning about in the Restorative Wellness Solutions course I was taking. I worked (and continue to work) on increasing my stomach acid, biliary function, and gut flora and have noticed great results since doing so. Gut health is always something I’ve prioritized because it truly is the foundation of our health, but this functional diagnostic test provided me with a great reminder that I needed to begin supplementing with things such as HCl once again.

After making these diet and supplement changes, I was still having very obvious symptoms of a parasite. The symptoms that gave me that I-have-a-parasite-gut-feeling were:

– Itchy vagina and anus
– Stomach bloat/distention
– Mucus covered stool
– Reoccurring infections
– Headaches/migraines

So, I completed a second stool sample and the results from this test finally confirmed what I knew, I had a parasite.

The reason I chose to do another stool sample is because parasites lay their eggs in cycles. Meaning, they are quite difficult to detect after just a single stool sample. This is not to say that you cannot find a parasite with a single test, but if your symptoms persist, it is a smart decision to test again (and I am so glad I did!)

The Importance Of Functional Diagnostic Lab Tests  

If it weren’t for functional lab tests, I would have never found my parasite. As a nutritionist, I will always go to diet first when it comes to our health care.

Personally, the first changes I made were to my diet – I saw that my diet wasn’t supporting stable blood sugar levels, so I made some tweaks and felt positive results, but big health issues still presented themselves.

When we are eating in a way that supports our health, but our health is still compromised, we cannot continue tweaking our diet. Not only would that drive us crazy, but, at this point, it’s not a diet issue anymore.

As we can see in my personal story, I could change and tweak my diet all I want, but if I never found this parasite, I would have never been able to feel myself again and address the root cause of my issues.

The same goes for my clients: we can look at their diet, ensure they’re consuming a nutrient rich diet that supports their unique state of health, but if health issues continue and we don’t know how they are functioning on the inside, they won’t be able to reach optimal health.
