Beyond the Eggs: May

Beyond the Eggs is a series on Meg the RHN that goes beyond food, nutrition, and, well, eggs. I share bits and pieces of my life with you as well as my favourite things of the month!

Hello, my friends!

I wanted to start a new series here on Meg the RHN that gave you a better glimpse into my life each month. In these posts, I plan to share with you my new favourite things, what I’m reading, watching, doing, and just what’s going on in my life in general! I hope you enjoy this new series and comment, sharing what’s going on in your world this month, too! I imagine these posts will only strengthen the beautiful community we already have here and bring us all closer together!

At the beginning of the month, I returned from my two week vacation in Barbados! For the past 6 years, my family and I have been going to Barbados as we have absolutely fallen in love with the island and the people there. We have made friends with locals on the island, so we like going back every year to visit them and, although the island is not that big, it seems as though we explore something new each year! This year, Shawn even came to spend a week with my family and I!

While in Barbados, I actually read three books! I say “actually” because I haven’t read a book in a very long time, as I have been so busy writing my own book, but I wanted to take the two weeks I spent in Barbados completely off from anything nutrition relation, so I read three fiction books and I absolutely loved it! I read All the Missing Girls, Animal Farm, and Who Do You Love. I loved each of them and I would recommend all three, however, All the Missing Girls definitely wins for one of the best fiction books I’ve ever read!

One thing I really missing while away for two weeks was The Voice! Is anyone else hooked like I am? I honestly don’t watch much TV at all. My TV watching is truly limited to The Voice and hockey (however, not now because the Oilers lost out… don’t even get me started on that), but I really do look forward to watching The Voice every week. My pick to win is Hunter Plake! In my opinion, he is by far the best contestant!

While in Barbados, I used the Alba Botanica sunscreen for the first time ever and I was so impressed! I didn’t burn at all and it stayed on really well – without making me all white and pasty! I thought I would share this as I know summer is right around the corner and I am sure many of you are in search of a safe sunscreen that actually works, just as I was!

Listening to

If you know anything about me, you know that I am one of the biggest Ed Sheeran fans. So, I was so excited when he came out with a new album this year! Because, if I was actually listening to a CD disc every time I listened to his last album, I’m sure it would have been worn out by now because I have listened to it so many times. Although I love the entire album, the song I’m loving most right now is What Do I Know? I can’t help but smile and dance when I listen to this song! I actually have caught myself dancing a few times while walking around my neighbourhood… and I’m sure the neighbours think I’m quite entertaining!

Although it’s May, sunny, getting warmer outside, and cool, crisp, crunchy salads are something most of us find ourselves craving at this time of year, I have been totally obsessed with my slow cooker ever since getting back from Barbados. I have been slow cooking pork roasts I got from the half pasture raised pig I purchased earlier this year and can’t get enough of pulled pork! So far, I have slow cooked a Boston butt roast and a bone-in leg roast following this recipe. Why it took me this long to make kalua pig is beyond me! It is definitely one of my favourite things!

I’ve also been having fun with my workouts lately! Strength training is one of my favourite things to do and I will typically lift 2 – 3 times per week. I write my own workouts, which are usually full body, as I find this type of training the most fun and effective! A typical workout for me will usually consist of a lower quad dominant exercise (like a squat), an upper body pulling exercise (like a pull up), a lower hip dominant exercise (like a deadlift), an upper body pushing exercise (like any type of press), and then I will often finish by doing some type of core movement. The other day I tried bodysaws for the first time in a really long time and I forgot how much I love this exercise! Ben Bruno has a great article on how to properly do a bodysaw.

I would love to know what you’re loving this month! Share with me below!

  1. Hi Meg, I remembered you mentioned on the podcast that you got some unpleasant symptoms from cacao/cocoa powder. Is this something you could talk more about on the podcast? I am so addicted to dark chocolate, I seriously CAN´T kick the habit, even if it gives me a racing heart, headache and sore joints. Why is it so addictive? I take magnesium supplements every night, but I still crave the chocolate after every meal, and I can´t control my portions.
