The 4 Skin Care Products I Use Every Day

For the past several months, I’ve been frequently asked about my skin care routine. My skin has definitely become noticeably more vibrant and clear (I rarely even use make up anymore!) over the course of the past six months and you have noticed, so I have been wanting to share the changes I have made to my skin care routine with you!

My skin has definitely not always been clear or as vibrant as it is now. I am now often told that my skin is “flawless”, but it definitely was not always this way. Although I never struggled with acne to the extremes that some people do, when I look back on pictures now, I am usually shocked, as I forget about how bad the acne on my forehead actually was at times.

I came across these two pictures that show the inflamed acne I had on my forehead and even around my mouth. This acne persisted for many years, until I began studying holistic nutrition in 2013. It was then that I learnt about what could be the underlying reasons to my acne that refused to go away.

In my private practice, I often work with clients struggling with acne and it is almost always due to one of two things: a food sensitivity or a hormonal imbalance. For me, it was very much a sensitivity to dairy. In February 2014, I eliminated dairy from my diet and within 30 days, my acne cleared up. Since this time, I have followed an almost 100% dairy-free way of eating as I have noticed improvements in my health that go beyond the clarity of my skin. However, I will have butter and grass fed cheese occasionally because I really love these foods and they do not affect me negatively when I have them in small amounts on occasion.

Although the elimination of dairy dramatically improved the clarity of my skin, it wasn’t until six months ago that my skin started becoming noticeably more clear, vibrant, and “glowing” and it was at this time that I began using new skin care products on a daily basis.

As a holistic nutritionist, it is so important to me that I not only choose foods that support the health of my body, but that I also choose products (such as beauty and household cleaning products) that support the health of my body, too.

Another key piece of information that I learnt while studying holistic nutrition is that what we put on our bodies is just as important as what we put into our bodies, so I started to become much more aware of the ingredients in my beauty products, as well as all of the other products I brought into my home.

I could write an entire post about the harmful ingredients (such as toxins like phthalates and parabens) that are in so many of the products we use on our skin and within our homes today, however, what I want you to know is that once we are educated about the harmful ingredients that are within the products we use, we can start making informed decisions and slowly make better choices for ourselves and our health. This is exactly what I did.

Slowly, I started swapping out products that contained harmful toxins for safer products. A great resource to use is the Environmental Working Group. On their website, you can search the products you are currently using and find out what the rating for each product is as each product is given a rating on a scale from 1 – 10. Products with a score of 1 – 2 are considered to be “low hazard”, 3 – 6 is “moderate hazard”, and 7 – 10 are “high hazard” products. When purchasing products to use on your body and within your home, you will be wanting a score of 1 – 2. For more information on this scoring system, read here.

In December 2016, I started using the Verage skin care line from doTERRA. The line includes 4 products – a cleanser, toner, hydrating serum, and moisturizer – and each of them not only contain a different blend of essential oils that are incredibly supportive of skin health, but each of the products also have a rank of either a 1 or a 2 according to the Environmental Working Group rating system.

I have been using each of these 4 products on my skin on a daily basis for the past 6 months and I can’t imagine going a day without them now! I not only love them because the ingredients within them are safe, but they are all I ever need for my entire skin care routine! And, like I said, because of these 4 products, I hardly ever wear make up anymore!

These are my 4 favourite skin care products that I use on my face every day:

Verage Cleanser

This is the one product of the four that I have actually been using since November 2015! I use it as my facial cleanser in the evening to remove my make up and also in the morning to cleanse my face. It contains wild orange and basil essential oils which are used for the cleansing and purifying benefits, but also melaleuca (tea tree) essential oil for its cleansing and rejuvenating benefits. I like to think of this cleanser as being perfect for any skin type as it is so balancing because of this combination of oils. It is nourishing, but I have never broken out because of it. It’s the first step of my skin care routine, every day!

Verage Toner

As I said, I started using the other three products from this Verage line in December 2016 after buying them for myself as a Christmas present! This toner is absolutely amazing and really works to tone and smooth the skin! After spritzing my face with it, I can instantly feel a difference in how smooth my skin is! It’s very refreshing and often I will just spritz my face with it whenever I feel like it! However, I always use it every morning before applying the next two products. It contains ylang ylang essential oil to soothe and nourish the skin while coriander and cypress essential oils add toning and rejuvenating benefits. The palmarosa essential oil is what adds the balancing properties.

Verage Immortelle Hydrating Serum

I couldn’t pick a favourite from these four products, however, this serum contains my all time favourite essential oil – frankincense, so it does hold a very special place in my heart! It smells amazing, but this is the product that gives me that instant glow after applying! Frankincense is known as the “beauty oil” and can be effective in reducing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and imperfections. The other oils in this serum include sandalwood (another favourite of mine!), lavender, myrrh, helichrysum (an amazing oil for the skin!), and rose. All of these oils together support the health of the skin and promote that youthful look! I put this on daily after I spritz my face with the toner! I just use 1/2 – 1 pump and focus on applying it under my eyes!

Verage Moisturizer

The reason I didn’t try these last three products as soon as I tried the cleanser was because I didn’t think my face needed the extra hydration. I was still trying to clear up some acne on my forehead, so didn’t want to add a hydrating serum and moisturizer on top of it all. I was under the impression that a moisturizer would cause me to break out, so I stayed away from it until December 2016. I realized that this line of skin care is really about balancing and not overly hydrating or moisturizing at all – to this day it has never caused me to break out and I use all four products on a daily basis! I apply this moisturizer last and love the scent from the blend of the essential oils it includes! Jasmine, geranium, sea buckthorn berry, and juniper berry are all incredible oils for the skin, but some of my favourite smelling oils, too! Juniper berry is particularly good for aging skin.

I wanted to share some recent pictures with you of how clear my skin truly is. Both of these photos are unedited, of course, and I am not wearing any make up – I just used the 4 products I listed above!

You can purchase these products separately or together as the complete line (FYI it’s less expensive to purchase all of them together). The wholesale price for the entire Verage Skin Care line is $90 USD or $107.50 CAD.

  1. Has completely changed my face too!! I actually was going to post a similar pic because my forehead used to be a disaster zone! I still get acne (but I do always have my hands on my face – a habit I still need to stop!), so there’s still some work to be done – and thank goodness for melaleuca/tea tree for pimples!!

  2. Great post, thank you! Since the moisturizer doesn’t contain spf, do you also add that in your routine? Any recommendations?
