Beyond the Eggs is a series on Meg the RHN that goes beyond food, nutrition, and, well, eggs. I share bits and pieces of my life with you as well as my favourite things of the month!
Oh, June. Isn’t this month amazing? Personally, June is and always has been my favourite month! It’s when things really start feeling like summer, the days are long, and… it’s my birthday month! Birthday’s always make for great months, however, I think June 2017 will be hard to beat! I had so many great moments this month and want to share them with you!
Ever since the end of 2016, I knew I would be traveling to Boulder, CO at the end of this month. However, a surprise trip happened at the beginning of this month! I was surprised with a puppy (finally!), who was located in London, Ontario. I know 2,477 kilometers (1,540 miles) seems a little far to travel for a puppy, but it had been three years since I had last been to London and saw my friends, so I made a trip out of it! I flew to London on a Monday and drove to pick up my new puppy the following day! We were able to spend all week in London together, getting to know each other and visiting my best friends from when I went to university, and then fly back home together! It was a great trip and I am excited that the next time I go to London won’t be so far away! While I was there at the beginning of this month, one of my best friends asked me to be her bridesmaid! So, I will be going back for her wedding in March!
Having two big trips happen in June really made this month fly by! I just got back today from spending the past week in Boulder, Colorado with Shawn Mynar! Although I likely would have made my way to Boulder this summer eventually, this trip was actually for the retreat Shawn and I hosted for the weekend! We hosted a brand new retreat called the Soul Sista Getaway and it took place June 23 – 25 in Boulder! Women from across North America flew down to spend the weekend with us, discuss topics about body image, self love, having a healthy relationship with food, and more all while eating the best food Boulder has to offer, hiking, yoga-ing, and just being girls! It was a weekend that nourished me on so many levels – mind, body, and soul – and Shawn and I already know this was the first of many annual Soul Sista Getaways, so be sure to keep your eyes and ears open for when we announce the dates for the next retreat!
I realize I am a little late to the party, but this month I finally watched the series, 13 Reasons Why. I also realize how controversial this series is becoming and I completely understand – while watching this series it really hit home for me in so many ways. The way high school was portrayed within the series was so spot on that it brought back so many not-so-happy memories for me, however, I really did enjoy the series and thought the acting was incredible. My Mom and I watched this together every night until we finished!
Another something that I watched this month that I must mention is the documentary, Embrace. I have been wanting to watch this documentary for a really long time now (and I really don’t know why it has taken me this long), however, I think when I watched it was perfectly timed as Shawn and I watched it this past weekend together after our retreat with the girls ended. Shawn and I were both so inspired by this documentary to do more, share more, and be more. We both have stories that have been inspiring women to love themselves, but this movie really motivated me to speak up even more than I have been. I highly recommend this movie and Shawn and I will be speaking about it in episode 118 of The Nourished Podcast!
There’s a new podcast that I want you to know about! In addition to The Nourished Podcast, Shawn has started a whole new podcast all on her own called Keto For Women! This is the podcast you should listen to for all things keto and how it applies to a woman! Shawn will be interviewing experts, but also REAL PEOPLE, which is so exciting! She will also be answering listener questions, so it’s a bit of everything and she already has two episodes on iTunes and has been ranked #1 podcast in the Fitness & Nutrition category on iTunes! You can find her podcast here.
If you know anything about me, you will know I like lists. I like to make lists for everything and with each new day I will write out a new list of all the things I have to do that day. My boyfriend, Scott, knows just how much I love lists and he also knows that I like to be productive and cross things off of these lists. So, he recommended an app to me called Swipes. I didn’t think I would like using an app for list making because I really like the pen and paper thing, but after a few days of using it I fell in love and use it daily now! One of my favourite features of this app is that it allows you to schedule tasks and also have them repeat on certain days of the week. For an example, Monday through Friday I have a task scheduled to answer emails and then I swipe right once I have completed each task!
It’s been a while since I’ve talked about DAVIDsTEA. Another thing you likely know about me is my love for tea, but especially DAVIDsTEA! When I lived in London, Ontario (where there was a DAVIDsTEA not too far away from me), I picked myself up a tea (or two or three) every single day. I was there so frequently (literally every single day), that people who worked at the mall where it was located, thought I worked there, too! Although I have never been a DAVIDsTEA employee, I like talking about their teas and sharing my favourites as they are something I truly love! While I was in London at the beginning of the month, I tried several of their new tea blends and discovered a new favourite! This new favourite of mine is called Rose All Day and is absolutely perfect for summer! It tastes very much like a wine and I enjoyed it iced the entire time while I was in London! Of course, it is caffeine free! Just the way I like it!
Although I ate so many incredible meals while in Boulder this past week, I wanted to highlight one of the best recipes I created this month! For Father’s Day, I smoked a brisket with my dad and shared the recipe with you here. Speaking of Boulder, though. I would like to write a blog post for you in the near future, sharing the best paleo/keto restaurants to eat at while in Boulder!
I had to save the best for last. Although this month was clearly jam packed with travel and so many good things, the highlight of my month was definitely becoming a fur mama to my fur baby, Penny. As I mentioned, getting her was kind of a surprise and the trip to London was totally last minute, but I cannot describe how grateful I am to be so blessed with such a perfect little puppy. It’s really quite interesting how we don’t necessarily know we need something (or how bad we needed something), until it comes into our lives. I didn’t think I needed a puppy right now, however, after not even a month with her, I can’t imagine my life without her. For those of you who are wondering, Penny is a toy poodle crossed with a maltese. Her dad was 5 pounds and her mom was 8 pounds, so she won’t be a big dog at all and when I got her she wasn’t even 1 kilogram! She is still very tiny and will be weighed again when she goes for her final round of vaccines in the mid-July!
I would love to hear about your June! What was the highlight of your month? Have you read, watched, or listened to anything good lately? Do you have a recipe you’d like to share with me? I can’t wait to hear from you!
