Ownership: My Word For 2018 (And How To Choose Yours!)

For the past couple of years, I’ve been choosing a word for the year. I choose this word at the end of December, so I can begin the new year with this word. This word acts as my anchor throughout the year – it supports me in decision making, it’s the driver behind my actions, and so much more. The word almost acts as a theme for my whole year.

In 2017, I chose the word shine and I highlighted many of the moments throughout my 2017 year that I consider to definitely be shine-worthy moments in this post.

At the end of December, before 2018 began, I decided that my word for this new year was going to be ownership and I love how the opportunity to take ownership is truly showing up in my life, every day. Ownership is proving to be the perfect word to anchor me throughout 2018.

What Ownership Means To Me

I realize the word ownership is quite bold, but I believe that is exactly what my year is going to be all about – being bold, stepping into my power, and really putting myself out there. Bold moves that will require me to take ownership of who I am, my voice, my vision, and the message I want to put out into the world. Ownership will prevent me from ever playing small. It’s time to play big, babes.

Why I Chose Ownership To Be My Word For 2018

The word I choose to be my word for the year comes quite intuitively to me, actually. As we came to the end of 2017, I could already feel this energy shift within my life that was pulling me closer towards the feelings and actions I described to you above – being bold, stepping into my power, and really owning my voice and message.

The word ownership definitely didn’t come to me instantly, but I knew exactly what I wanted to accomplish and how I wanted to feel throughout the year of 2018 – that’s where it starts, babe. Getting clear on how you want to feel.

In a conversation with my best friend, Kim, we were talking about the words we chose for 2018. Her word for 2018 is miracles and she shared with me why. At this time, I didn’t know what my word for 2018 was going to be, yet, so I explained to Kim how I wanted to feel throughout 2018 and all of the words and phrases that were coming to me every time I meditated.

Words such as action and focus kept coming to me while the phrase make it happen kept appearing, as well. However, I knew none of these words or phrases would anchor my 2018 because they all felt too forceful and not gentle enough for me, anyways.

If you know me, you know that I’m a gentle person and I’ve learnt to be gentle with myself over the years, too. I don’t force myself into anything that doesn’t intuitively feel right to me and nor did I see my 2018 year being all about focusing, hustling, and making it happen.

However, when the word ownership came to me, I knew that it was my word for 2018. The word came to me as I described to Kim exactly how I wanted to feel and what I wanted to experience throughout 2018 and, when it came to me, I knew it was the word I had been searching for all December!

Everything will come to you in divine timing, love.

Anchoring myself with the word ownership feels so good for me so far this year. I’ve included it on my vision board, journal about how I took ownership each day, and think about the word when I need to make a decision.

How can I take ownership right now?

This is something I often ask myself.

How You Can Choose An Anchor Word For 2018

As you’ve learnt from my story, choosing your anchor word for the year really comes down to intuition. It will come to you, but here’s what I suggest:

  1. Set some time aside for yourself in a day where you can be alone, in a quiet room, and have the ability to think or free write.
  2. Ask yourself how you want to feel throughout the year of 2018. Either explore your answers in your mind or journal them. I love journaling – I learn so much about myself when I journal (which is why I do it daily!)
  3. Without judgement, allow yourself to answer the question you asked yourself about how you’re wanting to feel throughout this year. What answers come up for you? Now, explore those. How does your answers make you feel?

By the end of this practice, you may have found your word. If not, you’ll likely have a better understanding on how you want to feel this year. I encourage you to give yourself time, continue to focus on how you want to feel, and, like I said, your word will come to you when the timing is right.

One of the ways in which I already took ownership this year is through the launch of Unbreakable Babe. Unbreakable Babe is a program that I’ve been dreaming up for nearly 4 years already, but hadn’t put it out into the world until now – remember what I said about divine timing, babe!

If you’re also feeling pulled to take ownership throughout 2018, you’ll want to check out Unbreakable Babe – where I guide women to step into their power, experience personal freedom, and finally cultivate self love! Read more about Unbreakable Babe here!
